Poets' Workshop at Poetic Research Bureau
This workshop explores language as art medium and will proceed along the lines of an advanced studio course; there will be an emphasis on imagination, experimentation, momentum, intensive discussion and collaborative review. Classes will be held in dialogue with a wide variety of artists/evocations such as Maya Deren, Aimé Césaire, HD, Man Ray, Kenneth Anger, Sappho, Bob Kaufman, Clarice Lispector, Daphne Oram, Julius Eastman, Bach and Donald Barthelme, among others. Particular attention will be given to the practice of reading aloud, performance and memorization as methods of embodying text and engaging with the essential physicality of language. Students will be encouraged to contribute to the development of the class through sharing their own writing and providing thoughtful feedback for the writing of their peers.
This Poets' Workshop will consist of five 2.5 hour sessions, one per week, held on Saturdays from 3:30-6:00, beginning on Oct 29th and ending Dec 3rd (there will be no class Nov 12th). There will be a $250 fee to participate, which will cover handouts and texts designed by Elaine. Since space is limited, admission to the workshop will be submission-based, with a cap at ten participants. To apply, please send a short portfolio of poetry (5-10 pages), along with your name, contact information, and a brief statement of why you’d like to participate in the workshop to [email protected] The submission period opens immediately and closes when filled.
